It's The End of the World - Classic Greys Anatomy Part I

Season 2 Episode 16 - A Bomb in a Patients Body

MEREDITH: [narrating] "It’s a look patients get in their eyes. Some kind of sixth sense, when the great beyond is headed for you, you feel it coming. What's the one thing you’ve always dreamed of doing before you died?"

Part one of a two part episode. This was a first for Grey's Anatomy. The episode opens with George dreaming about Meredith, Izzie and Christina; naked in the shower. George wakes up, and promptly falls out out of bed and at the same time Meredith says (narrating) "Clearly not my dream!" Izzie and George are ready for work and waiting for Meredith who has refused to get out of bed; saying that she has a feeling, a feelilng that she might die. They end up calling Cristina, who comes over and after a conversation with Meredith about Addison having her Mclife, and her feeling that she might die, Cristina physically kicks Meredith's ass out of bed with the words: "Whatever. Everybody has problems. Get your ass out of bed and get to work. NOW! Move, move, move!"

Meredith's fear that she was about to have a bad day was soon confirmed. She is standing in the ER when Derek asks "What's wrong?" She tells him "I have a feeling." He thinks about this for a second and says "I have those." Meredith asks him what to do about it, and Derek says. "Wait for it to pass." But from the look on Meredith's face her feeling is not going to pass any time soon.

A patient with an unexploded bomb in his chest arrives in the ER. A young paramedic; Hannah has her hand in his chest, essentially stopping him from bleeding out. Dr Burke takes him up to surgery, unaware that there is a bomb in the guy's chest. When Alex questions the patient's wife and best friend, he realises that the ammunition did not explode and an unexploded bazooka bomb is in this patients body. Alex runs like hell to the OR. He informs Burke, who declares a Code Black.

Meanwhile Bailey arrives outside the ER and asks George to page Addison Shepherd, then her water breaks all over Georges shoes. She is rushed to maternity, just as her husband, Tucker is brought in to the ER, having crashed his car on the way to the hospital. It's a severe head injury and Shepherd is paged, and rushes him to the OR for emergency brain-surgery.

Seattle Grace goes into Code Black status and the Chief orders the entire OR floor be evacuated and the bomb squad are called in. Bailey is calling her husband and has George running everywhere looking for him. When he does learn the truth and tells Addison, she tries to keep the news from Bailey, however Bailey figures out that something is wrong and drags the truth out of Addison.

Filling Them In

Izzie, George and Addison in the Elevator. "It's Bad." Addison says, "Go to your locker room and wait for instructions from your resident."

When told to evacuate by Dylan; the hunky bomb squad expert and the Chief; Derek refuses to leave the OR as he does not want to just let Bailey's husband die on the table. He tells everyone in his OR that they should all evacuate. Everyone leaves except one scrub-nurse, the anesthesiologist and Cristina. Derek tells Dylan: "The chief does not scare me, Dr Bailey scares me."

Bailey decides she is going home, and having the baby tomorrow, much to George and Addison's horror. She starts packing her suitcase telling George he needs to drive her home. He tells her he can't do that and Bailey keeps pacing around saying that she will have the baby tomorrow.

In the OR where the patient with bomb is, Dr Miller, the anesthesiologist deserts Hannah, telling her to squeeze to ventilation bag in even beats. He leaves her alone with an unconscious patient and a bomb. Meredith and Christina peek in the window and realise that Hannah is all alone and freaking out. Meredith rushes over to her side; just as Burke and the bomb guy enter the room. Meredith tries to calm Hannah down but it's no use; Hannah panics, removes her hand and runs out of the OR. Everyone hits the deck except Meredith who puts her hand inside the patient's chest, and holds the bomb.

Everybody, Hit the Deck!

The episode ends with Meredith standing over the patient's body saying, "What did I do, what did I do, what did I do, what did I do?" and the screen fades to black. There is no closing narration, which was possibly a first for Grey's Anatomy too.
